How to enable root login to GNOME in UBUNTU 8

By default the root user is not allowed to log on to the GNOME desktop GUI from UBUNTU due to a security feature.

If you want to enable this, log on to the GNOME desktop as the user which you created when you installed UBUNTU, then click on System -> Administration -> Login Window ; once there click on the security tab and under the security heading check the box that says "Allow Local System Administrator to login" . Hit apply, ok and you are done!

still need to change root password

In order to log on to the GNOME environment, you still need to change the password for the root user as by default there is none set. To do this, give the following command:

sudo passwd root
